It wasn’t a big surprise when the number I called for P.K. Subban on Friday night was out of service. I always imagine that his cell numbers are sort of like the revolving licence plates on James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5.
But 50 minutes after our scheduled talk had come and gone, the Canadiens defenceman was calling from his parents’ home in Toronto to say he’d be delighted to chat — if I could phone him back in 10 minutes “right after Don Cherry,” the Coach’s Corner segment about to air during the first intermission of the Lightning-Rangers sudden-death game.

Cherry’s flamboyant floral jacket, which made Grapes look like someone had planted a garden on him and then added lapels, quickly had the sartorially splendid Subban talking about his own wardrobe for June’s NHL awards gala in Las Vegas.

“I’m working on something. I’m putting something together,” Subban said brightly, without elaboration.

We were speaking 17 nights following the Canadiens’ playoff elimination at the hands of Tampa Bay, and already Subban had just finished his second day of two-a-day workouts with Clance Laylor, his trainer and fitness consultant.

He had taken all of about a week off before beginning his long preparation for Habs camp, which still is more than three months away. Subban is past the point of letting himself tumble off the fitness and diet wagon to indulge in a way that he can’t during the season…
