Elite & Professional Football players typically train 4 days per week in the off-season and 1-2 sessions per week during the season. For youth players under 12, we recommend at least 2 training sessions per week for optimal development.  Whether you are a high school Football player, D1, college Football player, or even a professional in Major League Football (MLB), strength training and conditioning is important for Football players.

Expect minimum 60-minute per sessions including warm-up and cool down, with most lasting 90 minutes in our Football strength and conditioning program. Football demands strength, speed, power, coordination, and durability. Our coaches will closely guide your training, gradually incorporating speed training to enhance your explosive power on the field, improving your running, throwing, and hitting velocities.

Youth Football players, even as young as 6, can safely incorporate weight training & resistance training programs into their routines. Medical research has debunked the myth that lifting weights stunts growth. In fact, properly guided weight training can actually promote growth by increasing bone density. Ensuring proper instruction, appropriate weight loads, and a gradual progression is crucial for all youth athletes.  Studies have shown that proper training methods & strength exercises will significantly reduce common injuries in Football.

Youth players develop in the offseason to prepare their fitness level with proper training plans that are catered to their age and level.  Proper guidance will allow them not to overtrain so that they can play their best during the Football season.

Not necessarily. We recommend in-person workout routine at our Toronto location (125 Martin Ross Avenue, North York) where specialized equipment plus supervision of our certified strength coach(es) to maximizes results. However, we also offer training for Football players remotely via online coaching and hybrid models. Our program caters to seasoned athletes for independent training and provides online coaching with live feedback or video analysis for beginners and intermediate athletes, assisting them with technique, intensity, and program adjustments.

Optimal training drills vary based on an athlete’s age, size, and position. Youth athletes (under 12) primarily focus on bodyweight exercises, plyometrics, endurance training, emphasizing mobility, agility drills, and foundational movements like split squats, lunges, chin-ups, push-ups, and medicine ball training.

Elite, D1, college, and professional athletes require advanced strength programs utilizing equipment like barbells to develop explosive weightlifting movements, bench press, squats, interval training, and maximal strength. This allows their body – ligaments, tendons, and fascia – to move in synchrony, enabling them to effectively receive, react, and recoil from forces, a crucial skill to improve their on-field performance.

What you should avoid are doing too much slow moving exercises such as deadlifts, single-leg (unilateral) exercises, isometric training in the weight room, ladder drills, because that will slow you down and not prepare you for higher velocity movements, and higher impact forces.

The short answer is both.  Football is a sport that requires full body dynamic movements to allow one to change direction quickly.

A strong core & lower body strength  is fundamental for balance, speed, and power in Football. All power originates from the legs. We emphasize holistic training, focusing on the synchronized function of the glute, hamstrings, quadriceps, hips, ankles, calves, and knees using specific plyometric training exercises. The body makes unconscious, split-second decisions on the field, demanding a neurologically integrated approach to training.

Similarly, upper body strength significantly impacts speed. The adage “your arms dictate how fast you run” holds true. An optimal ratio of chest to back strength, triceps, biceps, is crucial for maximizing speed. To achieve peak Football power, focus on whole-body training, striving for ideal specific strength and power ratios, while prioritizing core strength.

We recommend dedicating at least 12 weeks, ideally 16, to a dedicated off-season training period free from competitive Football games. A common parental oversight is prioritizing spring games over foundational sports performance training, which ultimately limits peak performance. Elite athletes should prioritize a balanced approach, dedicating equal attention to on-field skills training, Football IQ development, and enhancing both physical and mental fortitude.

Dedicated strength training helps enhance both physical and mental abilities, translating to improved performance necessary to perform on the Football field. All players benefit from enhanced fundamental Football explosive movements like running, jumping, hitting, and throwing. While gym training is crucial, continued development of Football skills like throwing/catching a Football and Football IQ is essential throughout the year for all players.

A significant challenge we observe is that many Football athletes neglect dedicated off-season training. Analyzing how Football families have evolved over the past decade reveals a trend: increased participation in camps and spring Football, often prioritizing conformity over individualized development that truly enhances future performance.

Dominant Football players possess athleticism built upon a foundation of improve strength, power development, move explosively, speed, mobility, agility, and durability. Skill position players will benefit from all these qualities. Example exercises like squats significantly impact “starting power” – the ability to overcome inertia quickly. Leg strength is paramount for helping athletes achieve faster running speeds. However, true physical performance and enhancement requires consistent application in the game of Football to match the demands of the sport.
