LPS Athletic vs. Elite Training Systems

Elite Training Systems vs. LPS Athletic: Choosing Your Path to the Pros

In Durham Region, Elite Training Systems (ETS) calls itself “Durham’s Leading Athlete Development Center.” It’s owned and operated by Jeff Watson and Sean Harrison, each with 15+ years in athletic performance, and has trained athletes in hockey, basketball, lacrosse, baseball and soccer from minor sports to the pros.

Both ETS and LPS Athletic build programs around the individual athlete, and both work with athletes from youth to professional. But their philosophies on how an athlete reaches the top are different.

If you are a serious athlete or the parent of a rising star, choosing the right environment isn’t just about the equipment. It’s about the Methodology. Here is how we compare.

The Philosophical Divide: The Complete Athlete vs. Dominance

The ETS Approach: Train. Fuel. Recover.

ETS’s mission is to “Build Complete Athletes through Training, Nutrition and Recovery.” Its philosophy centres on improving athletic performance, decreasing injury potential and “motivation through education.” Programs run by age and level: Grass Roots (U10–U13), Student Athlete (U14–U18), Varsity (NCAA/OUA/OCCA), Professional, team training and adult training. Many of them include nutrition support, yoga and in-house therapy.

  • Focus: All-round athletic development (speed, strength, power, flexibility, agility), with nutrition and recovery built in.
  • Best For: Durham-area youth, high school and varsity athletes, and teams, who want an all-inclusive development program close to home.

The LPS Athletic Approach: The Pro Maker™

Founded by Master Coach Clance Laylor (1 in 4 in Canada), LPS Athletic is built on the Athlete Activation System. We don’t just “train” you; we Remap you. Every program starts with a Remapping™ Assessment, every rep is coached, and we test athletes often in our training app so you can track your progress every week. We’re also the authors of the #1 Amazon International Best Sellers in Sports Training, Exercise & Fitness.

  • Focus: Neuromuscular dominance, explosive power, structural rebalancing and injury prevention.
  • Best For: Athletes driven to earn a scholarship, a national team spot or a pro contract, especially those who’ve plateaued or are undersized and need a real physical edge.

Real Transformations: Building Pros From Scratch

High school is where the gap opens. LPS specializes in giving student-athletes the strength to make the jump to the next level.

The Sekou Tunkara Story: Getting a High School Body Ready for College

At 17, Sekou was balancing school, basketball at Uchena Academy and training at LPS, and was ranked the #13 player in Canada. His coach warned him that college players would be far bigger. At about 178 lb he was getting knocked off balance and hurt often, with knee, back and neck problems.

“It’s about size and strength.” — Sekou Tunkara

The LPS Difference: It started with testing. Sekou fixed the tight calves that kept him from squatting deep. He gained almost 20 lb in about a month and a half, went from one chin-up to three or four, and now takes contact with far fewer injuries as he pursues Division I basketball.

The Gordon Whyte Story: From High School to University to the CFL

Gordon started at LPS in Grade 11, after training mostly on his own at his school gym. He came in at about 250 lb, “slow, a little bit chubby.” He left more conditioned than ever, played middle linebacker at St. Francis Xavier University, and later signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“My results have just been unreal… not only just the weight and working out aspect to it, but also the on-field aspect.” — Gordon Whyte

The LPS Difference: Coaching that pushes you to limits you didn’t know you had, inside a summer group of hockey, soccer, tennis and football athletes who push each other every set.

The P.K. Subban Story: From Minor Hockey to the Top of the Combine

P.K. came to LPS at about 15 or 16 with shoulder issues, wrist issues and a weak lower back, and he was overweight, slow and weak. We remapped his body in just 14 weeks. When the combine came, he was the top performer by far.

“It’s probably made the biggest difference in my career.” — P.K. Subban

The LPS Difference: The right physical foundation at the right age. P.K. was drafted by the Belleville Bulls (OHL), then by the Montreal Canadiens, and later won the Norris Trophy and signed a $72-million contract.
