LPS Athletic vs. Twist Performance
Twist Performance vs. LPS Athletic: Choosing Your Path to the Pros
Twist Performance + Wellness was founded in 1997 by Peter Twist, a former NHL sport conditioning coach, and its off-season camps became a signature for many pro and elite hockey players. Today Twist runs athlete development and adult fitness programs in Ontario.
Both Twist and LPS Athletic have trained elite athletes. But their philosophies on how an athlete reaches the top are different.
If you are a serious athlete or the parent of a rising star, choosing the right environment isn’t just about the equipment. It’s about the Methodology. Here is how we compare.
The Philosophical Divide: Movement Skills vs. Dominance
The Twist Approach: Functional Athletic Development
Twist follows the Canadian Sport for Life Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, teaching athleticism, movement, balance and strength to athletes aged 8–18, from beginner to elite. Its Smart Muscle™ approach focuses on “training the movement, not the muscle.”
- Focus: Speed, agility, reactivity, balance and functional strength.
- Best For: Young athletes building physical literacy and all-round movement skills.
The LPS Athletic Approach: The Pro Maker™
Founded by Master Coach Clance Laylor (1 in 4 in Canada), LPS Athletic is built on the Athlete Activation System. We don’t just “train” you; we Remap you. Every program starts with a Remapping™ Assessment, every rep is coached, and we test athletes often in our training app so you can track your progress every week. We’re also the authors of the #1 Amazon International Best Sellers in Sports Training, Exercise & Fitness.
- Focus: Neuromuscular dominance, explosive power, structural rebalancing and injury prevention, built on heavy, coached strength and Olympic lifting.
- Best For: Athletes who need to produce more force than their opponents, so they’re faster, stronger and more explosive.

Real Transformations: Building Pros From Scratch
A strong movement base is a great start. LPS is where driven athletes turn that base into real strength and power.
The Gordon Whyte Story: From Training Alone to the CFL
Gordon heard about LPS in Grade 11. Until then he’d trained on his own at his school gym, without a coach. He came in at about 250 lb, “slow, a little bit chubby.” He left more conditioned than ever, went on to play middle linebacker at St. Francis Xavier University, and later signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
“My results have just been unreal.” — Gordon Whyte
The LPS Difference: Real coaching and a real team. In our summer program, hockey, soccer, tennis and football athletes train side by side, each with sport-specific work, pushing each other to limits they never thought they had.
The Denzel Clarke Story: A Multi-Sport Athlete Who Got Strong
Denzel grew up playing soccer, volleyball, tennis and basketball before going all in on baseball at 16. When he was ready to take the next step, he came to LPS. He put on good weight he can move with, got faster, stronger and more powerful, and went on to win MLB’s Premier Play of the Year with the Athletics.
“LPS really builds you up. They don’t treat you like glass.” — Denzel Clarke
The LPS Difference: We train full range of motion and build athletes to be durable, so a broad athletic base becomes real strength and power.
The P.K. Subban Story: A Teenager Who Made No Excuses
P.K. started at LPS at about 15 or 16. His mother Maria, a former sprinter, felt what his team was doing wasn’t enough, researched training facilities across Canada and chose LPS. He came in overweight, slow and weak, and rode an hour-long bus each way to train. If he missed a day, he begged to make it up on Sunday.
“LPS is a big reason why my game is where it’s been for the past couple of years.” — P.K. Subban
The LPS Difference: We remapped his body in just 14 weeks, then kept building for years. He was the top performer at his combine by far, was drafted by the Belleville Bulls (OHL) and then the Montreal Canadiens, and went on to win the Norris Trophy.

- You want a high-stakes, competitive environment where every rep is coached by elite coaches.
- You’re driven to earn a scholarship, a national team spot or a pro contract.
