The title speaks for itself, yet has several different meanings. I am going to discuss this matter in one meaning: do not put the cart before the horse.

I see this more often than not in clients beginning the process of training. You may be coming back from a hiatus, or this may be your first time training (not working out) and you’re hyped up, but allow me to repeat because I cannot stress it enough: a pyramid has its foundation, and there is a process to get to the top.

Training with a qualified Fitness Professional, you must trust the process that he/she has set forth for you; a good coach will guide you with your best interests and goals as a priority, but first you must build the foundation! The following tips will ensure that you are on the path to getting your best results yet:

Set actionable goals

Your goals must be realistic, specific, measurable and time-appropriate. You can have ideas about goals, but ideas don’t move mountains. Bulldozers do. Take action daily toward the goals that you have set for yourself and you will be on the correct path to succeed toward them in a positive manner.

On another note, if you are a beginner and expect to squat 2x your bodyweight in two weeks ATG (ass-to-grass) and lose 10% body fat in that time, think twice, my friend. Be realistic about your goals with your Coach and discover the path in length as to how you’re going to accomplish those results.

Understand the process

This goes hand-in-hand with setting your goals. A qualified coach will ensure that you are on the correct path with a framework of a training and nutritional program. As discussed earlier, you must begin to develop the foundation to build the house, and this begins with structural balance.

If you have goals of being strong, healthy, and looking/feeling your best, it is critical to understand that your body needs to be as structurally sound as it can practically be. Not only with structural balance assist with your phtsique-oriented goals, it will provide you with a greater quality of life; you will move better and perform your tasks devoid of discomfort.

  • Structural balance = strength, longevity, well-being
  • Reduce risk of potential injury in future with a structurally sound frame
  • Putting the horse before the cart

Put forth your best effort

You have made the investment to hire a coach to achieve excellent results in health, body composition, and performance in a short time period: out forth your best effort!

As discussed earlier, a plan is in place from Day 1 that your coach has put their best effort in to develop to ensure that you experience a significant transformation; as such, you have to follow through. It is simple, you make the investment and follow through = you transform!

You set intensely high expectations for yourself in day 1, trust the process and put in the work to continue to build that metaphorical house.

How can you ensure that you’re keeping up with your goals? Find your ‘why’ as Simon Sinek proposes. Discover daily:

  • WHY have you made the investment to train (not workout) with a qualified professional.
  • WHY are you doing this in the first place?

To conclude, no matter where you are in your journey, trust the process, set realistic goals and take ACTION!
